Is it is a cheese grater with a handle, yep but I don't like the idea of denim fluff in my food so it is what it is. It is enough to dig into the fabric but not just immediately cut it so you can just lightly distress areas are go all the way to hole formation. Personally I like to start light just to create a bit of a pattern and just the beginnings of a small hole and let wear and wash help it more naturally develop. I tried to take a before and after pic on some older test jeans that don't fit anymore just to get a feel for the usage before taking them to a nicer pair of jeans but the digital pictures get a bit goofy because of the fine lines in the fabric (moiré effect). This was the product of less than 10 minutes. It's a tool you don't need but if you like to do such things it is just something else to help with the intended effect. My biggest complaint really is that there is a blue protective film covering the back that should just peel off but it won't and basically needs to be scratched off which is going to take a while. They get 4 stars because the pictures and description properly advertise the item and it wasn't outrageously priced.
